The shift towards Conscious Consumerism across multiple verticals has resulted in consumers worldwide using their purchasing power to go green. Adopting Green Building and Energy Efficiency solutions is especially relevant in the hospitality industry as it impacts the environment through consumption (energy, water), transportation and construction. Ironically, whilst the hospitality industry is dependent on a healthy global ecosystem, it is also uniquely vulnerable to environmental damage.

Ji Won Choi, a Project Manager at BEE, recently participated in a GREEN Hospitality Think Tank in Hong Kong, entitled Energy Efficiency and Design in Hospitality. During the panel she shared measurable ways in which BEE can assess existing strategies and offer green solutions to remove roadblocks and support sustainability practices.

  • Tailoring: Sustainability measures and design standards for hospitality groups need to be tailored and implemented, as existing third-party certifications are not customized to consider unique space types or functions in hotels.              (BEE has extensive experience in this respect.)
  • Support: Governmental incentives or subsidies are key to encouraging hotels to pursue multiple and necessary         third-party green building certifications
  • Certifications: While LEED is still the most recognized certification in the hospitality world, in the aftermath of COVID-19 there is rising demand for health and wellness solutions, especially in terms of coupling ESG pillars.
  • Financial: If players in the hospitality industry shared their ROI, the industry overall could present a strong business case for sustainability

BEE has been spearheading sustainability strategy development work with clients across Asia, developing and implementing tailored sustainable design standards, operations standards, and F&B standards. The overall goal is to protect our environment while helping clients meet their goals in carbon reduction as part of their Science-Based Targets.

Hotels play a vital role in the development of a sustainable tourism industry (from introducing viable operational practices to connecting social, cultural, and economic factors) that are vital for long-term environmental preservation. BEE is actively aligning hotel priorities with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), develop & target KPIs, and then measure & assess the results.
