As cities worldwide strive to achieve ambitious carbon neutrality goals, the focus on decarbonizing existing buildings emerges as a pivotal strategy. In the quest to curb carbon emissions and foster sustainable urban environments, the critical role of deep energy retrofits and building electrification cannot be overstated. So, how do we decarbonize existing buildings effectively to pave the way towards a carbon-neutral future?

GNFZ Certification for Existing Buildings

The Global Network for Zero (GNFZ) offers a solution that aims to help all existing buildings achieve a net zero status through GNFZ Certification for existing buildings. GNFZ is an international leadership collective of business and policy leaders dedicated to implementing actionable strategies and solutions that accelerate ESG compliance and the rapid realization of a zero-emissions world.

GNFZ Certification for existing buildings presents a compelling opportunity for organizations to make significant strides towards a sustainable future. With buildings accounting for a substantial portion of emissions, focusing on existing structures becomes paramount in our journey to achieve net zero.

Credibility and recognition

The certification process involves a comprehensive assessment of a building’s emissions baseline, calculating Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Building-specific targets can then be set, and a roadmap to zero is crafted with detailed implementation plans. The involvement of an independent third-party ensures credibility and recognition for key milestones achieved along the way.

Simplicity and accessibility

One of the remarkable aspects of GNFZ’s approach is its simplicity and accessibility. By emphasizing a singular, outcome-driven metric — carbon emissions reduction — the certification process becomes more approachable for all existing buildings. It is designed to scale progress incrementally, allowing all buildings to establish and execute their unique roadmap to net zero.

Supportive Ecosystem

By receiving GNFZ’s net zero certification, buildings gain access to a supportive ecosystem. The platform provided helps to track and monitor progress, facilitating collaboration among team members. Additionally, the certification process adopts an open set of best practices and standards, encouraging the implementation of effective net zero strategies.

Transparency and flexibility

The benefits of GNFZ’s certification are multi-faceted. Apart from its simplicity and accessibility, it offers an intuitive workflow with reduced documentation requirements, streamlining the certification process. The external and internal transparency it provides fosters stakeholder engagement and drives action. Moreover, buildings can tailor their approach, opting for either a holistic or incremental strategy, aligning with their specific needs.

GNFZ Certification Process

Through a systematic approach, buildings can initiate, implement, and sustain their net zero aspirations, supported by milestones and recognition along the way. This robust framework ensures credibility, transparency, and an achievable roadmap to a sustainable future.

INITIATE

The initiation process involves completing an initial emissions assessment, setting a net zero plan with targets, and obtaining milestone certificates for a building's net zero certification.

IMPLEMENT

During implementation, the emissions assessment, plan, and targets will be annually validated and adjusted until net zero certification is achieved.

SUSTAIN

In the sustain phase, ongoing monitoring will maintain the net zero certification, with updates for significant emission changes, accompanied by annual progress reports from GNFZ.

The certification process celebrates projects on their journey to achieving zero carbon emissions. GNFZ awards certificates for crucial milestones as follows:

• Assessment Certificate. Recognizing projects that perform a comprehensive inventory of emission sources, calculate Scope 1, 2, and 3, and adopt best practices and standards over 12 months.

• Net Zero Plan Certificate. Acknowledging projects that submit a detailed narrative document outlining their net zero implementation plan, including emissions calculation, timelines, carbon offset strategies, technologies, challenges, and more.

• Carbon Offset Certificate. Awarded to projects that report and track their planned carbon offsets budget, ensuring alignment with the net zero plan.

• Net Zero Milestone Certificate. Celebrating projects when they achieve their planned emissions reduction milestones as per their shared net zero plan.

Revolutionary Platform

In order to achieve the necessary digitalization and decentralization of climate action, GNFZ has launched a revolutionary platform that offers end-to-end support to individuals, businesses, and organizations in achieving their net zero targets. It helps to assess the Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, identify strategies and partnerships for reaching their goals, and independently verify and certify their net zero achievements.
